“Authority Over Satan” (9/22/24)
A. THE DEMONIAC (Mark 5:1-5)
- Gentile – “the region of the Gerasenes”: east of Jordan (Decapolis), Seen as not Jewish
- Possessed – “man with an evil spirit”: filled with demons and evil spirits
- Unclean – “came from the tombs”: unclean place, not allowed to be around
- Isolated – “man lived in the tombs”: No one would go near him
- Violent – “no one could bind him”: Dangerous, very violent and destructive
- Supernatural strength – “tore the chains a part”: power not of human strength, but of the supernatural
- Constant suffering – “he would cry out”: shrieking and growling, like a beast (terrifying noise)
- Self-destructive – “cut himself with stones”: turns the man’s mindset to that of a rabid animal (destroy God’s image), causing harm to himself
B. THE PLEA (Mark 5:6-7) - “fell on his knees” – filled with fear and afraid of Jesus
- “What do you want with me?” – demons wonder why Jesus is there and afraid they would be tortured
C. THE DELIVERANCE (Mark 5:8-13) - “Come out of this man” – exerchomai (Greek) -> come out (this is how we get our word exorcism), drive demons out
- “My name is Legion” – Legion = multitude of demons, this event shows Jesus’ authority over sin (Luke 8:30)
- “He gave them permission” – Demons desperate to not be killed but want to go into the 2,000 pigs. Jesus allows this, which shows Jesus is with God and has authority to drive out demons
D. THE RESPONSE (Mark 5:14-17) - “saw the man…in his right mind” – being sensible
- “they were afraid” – people terrified of the event that unfolded, that the citizens of the towns nearby want him to leave
E. THE MINISTRY (Mark 5:18-20) - “Go home” – to move along, return and revisit your family
- “tell them” – share another’s message
“How much the Lord has done for you.” – The good things God has done for the demoniac
“How He has had mercy on you.” – God’s grace, an undeserving favor - “All the people were amazed.” – astonished that they witnessed Christ (John 9:1-2, 25), It’s hard to argue
Conclusion – - Satan is no match for Jesus. (1 John 4:4)
- Jesus can fully save. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- Go and tell what the Lord has done.
(Romans 10:15)
